The Constellation Orion sits above a throne of Pinnacles in this panoramic nightscape image taken at Trona Pinnacles, CA. The Tufa Pinnacles that serve as the foreground setting and as a 'throne' for the Constellation Orion were formed during the Pleistocene between 10,000 and 100,000 years ago. During that time this area was underwater in the Searles Lake and the minerals in the groundwater interacted with the lake water to form the pinnacles. All of the pinnacles in this area didn't form at the same time, this particular formation is located in the middle of the area and elevation which meant it was formed between 25,000 and 32,000 years ago. Up above the pinnacles the winter Milky Way can be seen. The constellations (clockwise from top) Perseus, Taurus, Orion, Monoceros, Canis Minor, Gemini and Auriga are visible in this image. Within these constellations there are areas of red nebulosity, the Great Orion Nebula, Rosette Nebula, Christmas Tree Nebula, Flaming Star Nebula and California Nebula. Also found in this field of view is the Pleiades Star Cluster and below them the Hyades Star Cluster. The bright star at the bottom of the image is Sirius, which is the brightest star found in our night sky.
