Nightscapes and Milky Way
Trillium Lake Night Sky
Located 7.5 miles south-southwest of Mount Hood a stratovolcano in Oregon, Trillium Lake offers some of the most picturesque views of the mountain. The night this panorama was taken the air was very still and with no winds the stars reflected brightly over the calm waters of the lake.
Above Trillium Lake and Mt Hood the fall season Milky Way can be seen crossing the sky. When this was taken the top of the bowed Milky Way was at zenith in the sky, another way of saying directly overhead. Starting in the left portion of the Milky Way the North America Nebula and Gamma Cygni nebulae show up as very bright red areas because of the massive amounts of ionized hydrogen in and around them. Further to the right and in the center of this image the larger circular area of red nebulosity the Elephant Trunk Nebula can be seen with the orange Garnet Star on the bottom right rim of the nebula.
Then right of center another area of red nebulosity NGC 7822 shows up on the way to two more bright red nebulae the Heart and Soul. Above the Heart and Soul Nebulae the Double Cluster can be seen, a really bright pair of star clusters that is easily seen with the naked eye under dark skies. All the way to the right and just above the trees the California Nebula is the last of the easily distinguishable areas of red nebulosity in this image. Finally at the very top the Andromeda Galaxy caps off this view of the night sky at Trillium Lake form Friday night, September 9th, 2016.
