Pacman Nebula NGC 281 in Narrowband
A bright nebula in the constellation Cassiopeia, the Pacman Nebula (NGC 281) is an area of hydrogen emission that is located in the Perseus Spiral Arm of the Milky Way. This narrowband image (false color) was captured over several nights in September from Grand Mesa Observatory. www.grandmesaobservatory.com
Located around 9,500 light-years away the Pacman Nebula is named as such due to it's resemblance to the famous video game character. In this image the majority of the structure of this nebula can be seen and to me it clearly looks like Pacman. This narrowband image was made by mapping Hydrogen Alpha images to the green channel, Sulfur II to red and Oxygen III to blue to get what is commonly referred to as the Hubble Palette because it was a good way to highlight the different narrowband images in a final color result when post-processing Hubble Space Telescope images.
Lit up by a very hot and bright O-type star at the center of the nebula this area is one of the many hydrogen emission nebulae that are illuminated by such stars. While they are not very common, comprising about 0.00003% of main sequence stars, because of how large, hot and bright they make up about 4 of the 90 bright stars you can see with your naked eye from our night sky. Also to note in NGC 281 are the numerous dark areas of nebulosity some of which are classified as Bok globules. These isolated and relatively small dense areas of cosmic dust and gas are where star formation might likely be taking place. The most notable of these is the dark area in the center of the image around the bright O-type star.
